Crazy Rasberry Ants: tiny ants near Houston are eating electronics. "Crazy" is because they walk funny. "Rasberry" after Tom Rasberry, the the exterminator who noticed them. They are resistant to traditional ant-killers and have multiple queens. More info.

Warren Ellis says we should start terraforming Mars already.

The Phoenix Mars Lander (Arizona.edu, JPL, NASA) landed in the polar region of Mars. It's goal is performing tests on the permafrost-like soil and ice and looking for organic materials. Equipment includes solar panels folded like fans, a arm with a scoop for collecting soil samples, a telltale for testing wind so samples don't blow away, a main camera for many pictures, a camera on the arm which can take pictures under the lander, a thermal and evolved gas analyzer for baking samples to see what happens, a microscopy electrochemistry and conductivity analyzer for measuring the pH and ion composition of samples, and a laser for measuring the dust in the air (link). They are playing this to the nerds well with twitter updates and video on iTunes. Here's a panoramic view around the lander, a descent photo and an old photo of a Martian sunset.

07:34 pm: Paul
I don't know of many Camp people on livejournal, but for those of you who are:

Here's a photo album of Paul. There were a few albums on myspace that all required logins and I figured that's no good. I'll be adding to that as more photos come in... If you have some to add, please let me know.

Also, there'll be a "Counselor Respite" this weekend after Paul's viewing on Friday. People are welcome to spend the night at Camp. There will be much hugging and telling of stories. Ben has some other activities planned for us. Should be good times.

10:27 am: Dana Rocks!
She gave me the best gift basket I've ever seen. The beef jerky smells so good that the cat keeps trying to steal it. I'm so lucky :)

Current Mood: thankful

01:47 pm: Still Busy
Camp went well - the campers had fun, no one got hurt, we almost won the spirit competition and I got a plaque.

Dana is still in New Mexico studying. I'm looking forward to her phone working again. Stupid mountains. She'll be back in Lubbock tomorrow, taking the bar Tuesday through Thursday, and moving to San Antonio in early August. Yay :)

This weekend is scuba lessons. I need to go by tonight and sign up for them. I hadn't planned on taking them this weekend, but they take two weekends and I need to be finished with them by the cruise.

Next weekend I'm moving into our house. I've been trying to pack, but haven't gotten very far. Those darn kids keep encouraging me to stay up late. Speaking of which, pool with Paul is tonight.

10:42 am: Camp & Moving
I'm headed off to Camp until Friday. Yay for Camp. I'm a little nervous about being totally out of practice, but it should be a lot of fun. I'll get a workout and a nice tan. After Camp, I'll be in Lubbock until Sunday. Yay for Dana. She's only got two weeks left before the bar. After I visit Dana, she'll be headed out into the boonies for a week to have some secluded study time with her friends. I'll be home packing to move.

I gave my 30-day notice to the apartment complex at the beginning of the month, but I'm still not sure where I'll be living. I've put in an application of a decent little house very close to work. The neighborhood is a bit cookie cutter, with small lots and rules against parking on the street. But it has a nice yard, plenty of space and comes with a fridge so we don't have to buy one. They're supposed to let me know by Monday if I am approved to loan it. Very exciting stuff.

12:28 pm: Crazy weather (and a ring)
So it's 81° right now, and I'm told the high and low will be 89 and 70.
Very pretty, sunny day. And I have hail on my porch.

Also, someone asked for a photo of Dana's ring:

12:47 pm: iPod & CampLIFE
My iPod died last week. I'll probably wait until June to buy a new one. I'm not sure what to do in the meantime. Audible is offering a free shuffle if you agree to a 6 month plan. Satellite radio is pretty cool looking too. Maybe I'll go old-school and start carrying around CDs.

I'm headed out to Camp LIFE this afternoon. It's at Camp For All in the middle of nowhere. The campgrounds are pretty impressive. Should be fun.

04:34 pm: Bank Error
I paid my USAA bills online a couple of days ago. This morning I checked to see if they went through. They had.

I'd like to pay off my car loan quickly, but perhaps I should wait until it won't take imaginary money to do it. So I called USAA and fixed it. They treated me like I was dumb enough to confuse paying the monthly bill with paying the entire loan (which I guess is possible, but I'm quite sure I didn't do).
Yay for pending credits...

04:46 pm: Some random updates
I've lost some more weight, 57 pounds so far.

I've been trying to be productive and scratch things off my to-do list. I filed my taxes last night. I sold off Dana's and my Lumos tickets in favor of a Caribbean cruise in August.

I played golf for the first time in about nine years. My dad & I played in a charity game on Saturday. I was sunburned and sore by the end of it, but it was a lot of fun.

Work has been keeping me busy, chugging away on NIfTI images and Endnote exports and microPET archives and Talairach Client updates.

03:48 pm: Engaged
Dana and I got engaged last week. It was on our two year anniversary. I managed to thoroughly surprise her. We're thinking of setting the date in March 07 - possibly St. Patrick's day.

I'd write a longer post, but Dana already has a pretty good story on her myspace and I don't want to bump the picture from the last post that I like so much.

03:58 pm: Mick's #27
I had a good birthday weekend, including inventing a new drink.

1/2 oz Grenadine
1/2 oz Razzmatazz
2 oz Tarantula Azul tequila
Splash Sweet & Sour
Shake & pour into a tall glass
Optional splash of OJ for pansies who said my drink was too strong

I also had dim sum yesterday including some chicken feet. Very odd food. Sort of like a buffalo wing with no meat, only skin and little toe bones. Looks like so:

When I grow up I want to be Jack Black as a Mexican wrestler.

Weeds is a great show. Too bad I have to wait until summer to see more episodes.

I finally lost weight again. Yay for enjoyable exercise like football, frisbee and volleyball.

Also, Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried.

01:36 pm: Busy Week
Last wednesday I bought a new Civic. It's black with a tan interior that I can't find a picture of online. I'll take one myself soon. It's a LX sedan with manual transmission. I'll be getting tint sometime next week. The only other add-on I got was an audio-in plug that they had to order. It arrived yesterday. If I get my car over to the dealer soon, I can directly connect my iPod to my car speakers for the first time. I've always had FM transmitters or tape adapters. Good stuff for the drive to Lubbock on Friday.

Friday night through Monday night was moving day. Roni & I are now moved into our new apartment. I'm sore from heavy furniture and two flights of stairs, but happy. It's a great looking apartment with a nice view. Again, pictures soon. I'm going to have to unpack some more before I find my camera. The cable guy came this morning, so I'm reconnected to the world.

The insane moving was frequently interrupted. Friday night was a party at Laurie's, which is about a quarter mile from the new place. Saturday night was camping at a great little ranch near Staples, TX. We drank beer, played chess, sat around a fire near the river and slept in tents. By Sunday, Roni's keys were locked in her car. I drove her to Austin to pick up a spare key (and a bed) from her parents' house. No luck on the key. Roni called AAA to try to get them to meet her in San Marcos. Driving back, the tire blew on my dad's truck. Roni got on the phone with AAA again to tell them we'd be late. She heard the operator giggle about our bad luck before her cell phone died. We changed the tire (the first time for both of us) and headed back to try to break into the car. We got back to the ranch and found a friend of a friend working on it already. He was had a mullet and no shirt, so we put our faith in him. He worked on it for several hours. Roni kept trying AAA with other people's phones, but service was terrible out there. Around 8pm, the guy popped the lock. We headed home & moved some more (until about 2am).

Monday, I skipped work to sleep and finish moving. Roni was sick and slept all day. Luckily Laurie & Mason came by to help move the last of the furniture and clean the old apartment. Laurie vacuums like a mad woman. Mason mops better than I expected. I cleaned the kitchen and gave myself chemical burns. My hands are peeling today. We finished around 5am and turned in the keys.

Also, I've lost a total of 41 pounds. I'll spare you the graph. I really need to buy some new pants.

01:43 pm: Weight again
Now that I've put my weight loss progress up once, I feel like updates are in order. I'll probably only update when I feel like bragging. For example, last week I gained a pound and there was no update. This week, however, there is one.

Here you go:
